Own goal history made in Euro 2020

The second matchday of Group F in the Euros saw Germany take on Portugal. The designated away team won the match 4-2, and two of their goals were own goals from the Portugal defense. Ruben Dias scored the first, followed by Raphael Guerreiro shortly after to give Germany the lead, after they were one goal down.

Some very unlikely history has been made in the process. Firstly, Germany have become the only team in the history of the European Championships to both concede and benefit from own goals in the same tournament.

Portugal are the only nation in the history of the major international tournaments to concede two own goals in the same match. And lastly, the 2020 Euros now hold the record for the most own goals conceded with 5. The previous record was at 3.

Guerreiro scored in the previous Portugal match against Hungary, and on the next matchday (yesterday) proceeded to knock the ball into his own net.

4 – Portugal are the first reigning champions in European Championship history to concede four goals in a single match in the competition. Shocked. #EURO2020 https://t.co/juHGYby6yi

The footballing world was curious to see which player wins the race for the Golden Boot in the Euros. But, as it turns out, own goals are now a staple in the tournament. And the best part about it is that we’re not even done with the group stages.

The race for the knockout stages is drawing to an end as teams get set to play their third and final group stage games. In the designated group of death, Portugal face off against France while Germany take on Hungary on the final matchday.
