Overwatch 2’s Enigma has now been revealed to be none other than John Cena. John Cena has been hinting at his presence in Overwatch 2 on social media, and the cat is now officially out of the bag. Blizzard has had notable Twitch streamers including Shroud, Keydae, and Scump “hacked” by a new hacker character named The Enigma as part of a novel marketing push for Overwatch 2’s Invasion update. The hacking efforts culminated in the release of a new Overwatch 2 trailer confirming The Enigma’s identity.

It’s unknown how important John Cena’s Enigma persona will be in Overwatch 2.

However, Blizzard has stated that between now and August 10, fans may expect to see more of John Cena as The Enigma. Fans will also be able to “actively participate” in the event, so it will be interesting to watch what occurs.

This is a far way from John Cena becoming a playable character in Overwatch 2, as some fans speculated when he began announcing his connection with the hero shooter, but the character might still become a larger part of the game’s storyline.

If The Enigma becomes a more prominent part of the Overwatch 2 story, some may find him redundant because the hero shooter already has a hacker character. After all, resident hacker Sombra has been in Overwatch 2 since 2016. She was the second post-launch character introduced to the Overwatch 2 roster, following Support hero Ana. Sombra’s kit has varied throughout the years, but it has always centered around creeping into the back line and making rapid escapes.

While some fans may be unhappy that the John Cena hints have not resulted in his becoming a playable character in the game, there is still a new character on the way for Overwatch 2. Blizzard has been tight-lipped regarding the new Overwatch 2 Support hero and what they may entail, but they are scheduled to enter the roster with the August 10 Invasion update. With the Invasion update slated to release in less than a week, fans should discover more about the character as soon as possible.
