JJ’s heartbreaking death at the hands of Groff has left fans devastated. Despite a passionate fan campaign — including billboards in Times Square and over 11,000 petition signatures — Rudy Pankow has been confirmed not to return [whats-on-netflix](https://www.whats-on-netflix.com/news/outer-banks-season-5-everything-we-know-about-the-final-season-so-far-04-2026/), meaning JJ’s death is permanent.

The showrunners have always known exactly how this ends. As they put it, they’ve known the final scene “from the beginning.”
