It’s fascinating that the world is such a small place. Oscar winning actor Olivia Colman has an Indian connection. A few years ago she appeared on the docuseries named Who Do You Think You Are and talked about her Indian roots.
She unravelled this fact about her on the show Who Do You Think You Are.
Olivia Colman and her connection with Bihar
The Oscar and BAFTA winner has Indian roots, Bihari roots to be more specific. Her great great great grandfather Charles had a wife of Indian heritage named Harriot whose native place was Bihar’s Kishanganj. She was born in 1800 when India was under East India Company’s control. In the beginning of the show, Olivia is sure that her people have never lived anywhere out of Norfolk. But she was surprised with joy when she discovered her Indian roots with Bihar as the show proceeded. She goes to the English countryside and acknowledges how her family is widely spread out. The first connections to India trace from there, through her maternal great great great great grandfather Richard Campbell Bazett. He had worked for the East Indian Company and operated mainly out of London and Kolkata during those times. Eventually, the actor gets to know about Richard’s personal life and as expected the children were born out of wedlock.
Later, she took a journey to Kishanganj where she fetched some detailed information about Harriot. As the video proceeded, it was revealed that Harriot’s mother was a local woman.
Olivia Colman was surprised by this new discovery about her life and ancestors. At one point, tears rolled down her cheeks. We can hear her saying “I’m so much more interesting than I thought I was…I hadn’t got a clue that India played any part of my family.”
