Foldable phones have become increasingly popular in recent years, and the technology has also made its way into foldable laptops. Now, it seems like foldable tablets are going to be next, and it is being claimed that OPPO is working on just such a device. OPPO’s foldable tablet first appeared in a patent application at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Separately, previous reports indicate that Apple is working on a foldable iPad as well.

OPPO’s Foldable Tablet in the Works, Newly Filed Patent Suggests a Book-Style Design Similar to Foldable Phones

The OPPO patent was first filed in China in June 2022 under application number 202230375288.6, and WIPO officially registered it on March 4, 2025. The filings themselves identify OPPO, China as the patent holder, and come with a slew of design schematics showing the device from different angles. At first glance, OPPO’s first foldable tablet looks like a run-of-the-mill large-size tablet with a thin body and a lone circular camera sensor on its rear.

The left side is left bare while the right edge has a power button, a USB-C port (the device’s hinge folds up like a book), and volume rocker buttons closer to the bottom. The hinge lets the device fold in half, which makes it on par with book-style foldable phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and OPPO Find N5. But it could also resemble foldable laptops such as the ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold due to the fact that its in the same familiar tablet form factor.

There are many potential use cases for the foldable tablet. Some benefits include improved productivity and multitasking, as the split-screen feature enables users to use apps simultaneously. Portability is also a plus; a folding design makes it less unwieldy to transport. The device might also double as a laptop alternative, with one screen used for viewing content and the other for an on-screen keyboard, the report said.
