OpenAI unveiled a new agent in ChatGPT named Deep Research that processes complex, multi-step tasks at record speed. Things that would have taken humans hours can now be done in minutes. It seems there needs to be a productivity wing or department solely due to online research work, and this is what Deep Research is for, doing all the heavy lifting of analyzing and summarizing online sources.

OpenAI Launches Deep Research: Solution for Complex Tasks with Web Browsing and Data Analysis
Powered by OpenAI’s o3 model, Deep Research specializes in web browsing and data analysis. It can even analyze PDFs that are already available on the web, taking existing knowledge and reframing it with insights. Deep Research is only available to Pro users at this time. It’s in the ChatGPT message composer — just select the agent, type your question, and drop any relevant files in case you have them, such as Google Spreadsheets.
Deep Research will next mine the online resources and parse any other material or images you’ve provided, then present you with an index of its steps and resources in an accessible sidebar for transparency.
Depending on how complex the query is, tasks can take anywhere between 5 to 30 minutes to get completed. You’ll get a message when it’s finished. Open API plans to allow users to include images, data visualizations, and others in reports for better presentations sometime soon. While Deep Research is built for complex requirements, it remains in a very early stage, with a few limitations.
OpenAI has acknowledged that Deep Research may sometimes “hallucinate facts” or make incorrect inferences, but it does so at a lower rate compared to current ChatGPT models. OpenAI is actively working to refine the tool, with improvements expected over time.
By the end of the month, Deep Research will be available on both mobile and desktop apps. In the future, users will also be able to access more specialized data sources, such as subscription-based or internal resources, to create more tailored and powerful outputs. OpenAI’s goal is for Deep Research to handle research and complex tasks, freeing users from the time-consuming process and offering a highly efficient solution.
