Despite being a year old, the OnePlus Open (which is just an Oppo Find N3 in China) still remains one of the better options for foldable smartphones. However, reports have recently started to emerge indicating that Oppo and OnePlus could be killing off their flagship foldables. However, this does make fans and tech enthusiasts a little worried but we should always tread with caution when it comes to these so-called claims.

Rumors Suggest Oppo and OnePlus May Discontinue High-End Foldables, But Is It True?

Rumors about the phone initially appeared in NotebookCheck, which had received information from a Chinese news site called Leifeng. According to the report, a leading foldable manufacturer is reevaluating its approach to large-screen foldable products and has suspended plans for new foldables to be released in 2025. The report mentions nothing about the brands other rumored to take such a decision, however, it does hint towards Oppo and OnePlus.

The report added that other foldable makers such as Xiaomi and Transsion (the company behind Tecno) are also said to be struggling in the foldable segment, just like Oppo. Transsion only recently debuted the Phantom V Flip 2 and V Fold 2 but has also seemingly stopped work on any future foldables. However, the report stops short of explicitly blaming any one company for these challenges, creating even more ambiguity around the issue.

So the idea that Oppo and OnePlus might be done with foldables isn’t entirely new. Some same rumors circulated regarding how Oppo and Vivo (sub-brands under the BBK Group) would stop production of foldables because they’d hit a shrinking market share earlier this year. But soon afterward Oppo denied all this, reassuring everyone that it will continue to release foldables.

But with foldables gaining traction (the OnePlus Open for instance) in recent weeks, it also seems very unlikely Oppo and OnePlus would give up on the category entirely. They also teased a sequel, suggesting that the companies are still interested in the foldable space. As such, while the rumors are definitely noteworthy this week, we would take them with some skepticism since Oppo and OnePlus both have a history of using other approaches rather than giving up fully on a particular strategy.

FAQs

Are OnePlus and Oppo discontinuing all foldable phones?

No, the rumor only suggests they may stop producing high-end foldable smartphones, not all foldable ones.

When will the next OnePlus foldable be released?

While there is speculation about future plans, there is no official confirmation on a new foldable from OnePlus or Oppo yet.
