Olympiacos defeated Fiorentina 1-0 in the finals of the Europa Conference League, becoming the first Greek side to ever win a European trophy. The only goal of the game was scored in the second half of AET by Ayoub El Kaabi, ensuring that Fiorentina suffered defeat in consecutive Europa Conference League finals.

Last year, it was West Ham United who won their first European trophy by defeating the Italian side. And this time, even though they were the stronger side on paper, they have been defeated and will end the season empty handed.

What’s really interesting is that the club has won silverware not only with the men’s senior team, but also with the youngsters. Olympiacos have won the UEFA Youth League, as well as the Conference League, marking an incredible season for the Greek side, and sparking widespread celebrations back home.

For Jose Luis Mendilibar, it is two European trophies in two seasons after winning the UEFA Europa League with Sevilla against Roma last year. And this year, it is with Olympiacos. On both occassions, his team was the underdog, overcoming huge odds to win.

With his title deciding strike in the final, El Kaabi became the only player with 11 knockout stage goals in any UEFA competition. The previous record was 10, achieved by Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, both in the Champions League.
