Mauricio Pochettino has been officially unveiled as the new manager of Paris Saint-Germain after plenty of anticipation and speculation over the last week regarding the Argentinian’s future in management.
Former PSG boss Thomas Tuchel was dismissed owing to a ‘lack of influence on the squad’ and differences with Sporting Director Leonardo regarding transfers, as well as various other sporting decisions.
The German managed to lead PSG in back-to-back French League titles in 18/19 and 19/20. The season gone by also saw him complete the domestic treble, winning the French Cup as well as the French League Cup in the process, but missing out on the Champions League.
The Parisians managed to progress onto their first Champions League final in history, and fell short of the summit of the European mountain to Bayern Munich.
Expectations will be very high from the 48-year-old, and winning the French League title will be the bare minimum to qualify for a decent season at the very least.
The reigning Ligue 1 champions will be hoping to finally get their hands on the Champions League title under Pochettino, who has experience in the competition with Spurs, whom he led to the 18/19 final as well, losing to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
“I am really happy and honoured to become the new coach of Paris Saint-Germain,” he told the club’s website.
“As you know, this club has always held a special place in my heart.
“I have wonderful memories, especially of the unique atmosphere of the Parc des Princes.
“I return to the Club today with a lot of ambition and humility, and am eager to work with some of the world’s most talented players.”
The appointment of the Argentine is expected to be a valuable argument in trying to convince Kylian Mbappe to extend his contract at the club, whilst also possibly luring Leo Messi in the summer and sign other quality players to win the Champions League.
