Real Madrid's financial situation is much worse than it appears

Florentino Perez has been re-elected as the Real Madrid President until 2025, as officially confirmed by the club. The 74-year-old ran unopposed for the elections called in by the club the week before.

‘Given the existing health situation resulting from Covid-19, the president, Mr. Jose Manuel de Carlos Grau, has decided that the members of the Electoral Board who so wish may participate telematically.

‘Having presented no more than one candidacy declared by this Electoral Board and by virtue of article 40, section E, point 2 of the current by-laws of the club, Mr. Florentino Perez Rodriguez is declared president of Real Madrid.’

The requirements for the candidacy of an individual required them to be a member of the club for 20 years. Additionally, they had to produce 15% of the total budget of the club which amounted to over €100 million. Nobody managed to step up since the time that the election was announced, and Perez has now automatically been re-elected again.

Perez has been in charge for 12 years since taking over from Ramon Calderon from 2009. During the current President’s reign, the club completed the Decima and hav won five Champions League trophies and La Liga titles, ushering in one of their most prolific spells in their history.
