In a surprising turn of events, Real Madrid have announced the return of Carlo Ancelotti to the club as the new head coach. Don Carlo makes his return after six years, being chosen over the likes of Antonio Conte, Massimiliano Allegri, Raul Gonzalez and Mauricio Pochettino.

Ancelotti has signed a three-year contract with Real Madrid and will take over the club immediately. His contract with Everton has been terminated with immediate effect, with the Italian bringing his spell at Goodison Park to an end with a move back to the Spanish capital.

Madrid fans have a special place in their memories for the Italian since he was the man in charge when they won the fabled La Decima. He also won the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and the Copa del Rey in his first season in charge in 2013/14. However, a trophyless 2014/15 and heat with Florentino Perez saw him sacked at the end of the season, as Barcelona lifted the treble.

Los Blancos’ 20/21 campaign was similar to 14/15 in the sense that they had an extremely injury-ridden season, and went trophyless. And Ancelotti will have to adapt and learn from his last year at the club, and the campaign gone by.

I would like to thank Everton FC, my players and the supporters for giving me the opportunity to manage this fantastic and historical club. I decided to leave as I have a new challenge with a team that was always in my heart, Real Madrid. pic.twitter.com/SDV8T7qMDR

Madrid need a new cycle, and Ancelotti, with his CV, is one of the most decorated managers out there to lead the club into the future. One of the instant impacts of his arrival has been Lucas Vasquez agreeing a contract renewal until 2024. And the future of Sergio Ramos could also lie at Madrid, now that the Italian is back at the club.
