Following months of speculation and leaks, Nvidia has officially announced its plan to reveal a new lineup of graphics cards. The announcement was accompanied by a video showcasing a GeForce RTX Founders Edition graphics card suspended above the Earth’s horizon, displaying the date January 8th, 2024, at 8 AM Pacific time.

This confirmation indicates that Nvidia will introduce the new graphics card series during CES 2024. Fortunately, several crucial details have already surfaced from various sources.

The All New Nvidia RTX 40 Super Series

The upcoming GPUs are anticipated to be the much-discussed RTX 40 series Super refresh, which has been circulating in online leaks and rumors for an extended period. Nvidia’s refresh is projected to include at least three novel Ada Lovelace RTX 40 series GPUs: the RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti Super, and RTX 4080 Super. The RTX 4070 Super and RTX 4080 Super are expected to boast a significant increase in CUDA cores compared to their standard counterparts. Meanwhile, the RTX 4070 Ti Super is predicted to exhibit a core count boost along with a substantial memory upgrade compared to the outgoing 4070 Ti.

Reportedly, the RTX 4070 Super will feature 7,168 CUDA cores, the RTX 4080 Super will include 10,240 CUDA cores, and both will incorporate 24 GT/s GDDR6X memory ICs. The RTX 4070 Ti Super is said to include 8,448 CUDA cores, 16GB of memory capacity, a 256-bit bus, and 22.4 GT/s GDDR6X memory chips. Speculation also suggests the introduction of the supposedly-cancelled RTX 4090 Ti/Titan Ada as the fourth GPU in the new 40 series Super refresh, although this seems unlikely.

The RTX 40 series Super refresh is anticipated to rejuvenate the RTX 40 series by offering updated GPU configurations at more competitive prices compared to the current SKUs. This strategy mirrors the approach taken with the RTX 20 series Super refresh. The initial launch of the RTX 40 series faced criticism for exorbitant GPU prices and marginal performance improvements, notably with the RTX 4080 and RTX 4060 Ti, which exhibited poor performance per dollar at launch, especially the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB.

This discontent likely played a role in Nvidia’s decision to authorize a mid-cycle refresh. While there is no guarantee that the RTX 40 series Super refresh will completely resolve pricing concerns, it is expected to inject the market with competitive GPUs. The unveiling of Nvidia’s RTX 40 series Super GPUs will soon reveal how they stack up in terms of competitiveness.
