NVIDIA GeForce MX550 Discrete GPU isn’t up to the Mark of our Expectations

NVIDIA recently announced the GeForce MX550 Discrete GPU, which is intended to replace integrated graphics on mobile devices but leaked benchmarks suggest that it only slightly outperforms current GPUs.

The NVIDIA GeForce MX550 graphics processor is based on the NVIDIA Turing architecture (TU117 GPU) and features more CUDA Cores and better memory speeds. The MX550 outperforms the latest integrated GPUs in picture editing, video editing, and gaming. The MX550, in conjunction with NVIDIA Optimus technology, provides the optimum balance of performance and long battery life.

The PassMark benchmark provides the first evidence of performance for the NVIDIA GeForce MX550 GPU. In the PassMark test, the NVIDIA GeForce MX550 GPU earned 5014 points, similar to AMD’s Vega integrated graphics found in its Ryzen 5000 APUs. The MX550 was tested against the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS iGPU in the G3D Mark test. Regardless, the AMD Vega GPU received 4968 points, a difference of 46 points (0.9 percent), indicating that NVIDIA’s low-level GeForce GPU was just marginally better than the Ryzen 9 5900HS integrated graphics processor.

The G3D score is a visual representation of the test suite. Only when all of the tests in a single suite have been run do these values appear. Because there are only a few test samples available in this situation, the scores for the two manufacturers are based on one MX550 score and nine Ryzen 9 5900HS samples. It’s worth noting that the PassMark GPU benchmarks aren’t well-liked and are rarely used.

NVIDIA’s new MX550 graphics processor lacks raytracing and DLSS capabilities, rendering it unsuitable for gaming, but that is not its major focus. The MX550 is expected to be marketed as a replacement GPU for regular consumer use, with a focus on remote working and casual gaming.

However, even if the TDP is between 15 and 25 watts, a separate GPU will consume more power, lowering the laptop’s overall battery life when compared to an integrated solution. The precise TDP of NVIDIA’s MX550 has yet to be confirmed by the manufacturer. Since NVIDIA has stated a release later this spring, we anticipate hearing more in the coming months.
