The latest leaks regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 are already indicating that the system may be powered by an 8nm chip, with clock speeds potentially revealing an optimal but exciting hardware configuration. Digital Foundry’s podcast had some interesting spec analysis as well, noting that while portable mode GPU clock speeds seem modest, CPU clock speeds in portable mode are surprisingly better than docked mode. It says a lot about the availability of possible battery-saving options or different CPU frequency modes. The 8nm T239 chip that the system uses seems reasonable considering what can be expected at this process node, but there are doubts about low memory bandwidth becoming an issue, particularly in consideration for a suspected 1080p display.

Nintendo Switch 2 Leaks Reveal 8nm Chip, Unique CPU Design, and DLSS Speculation

The reveal trailer, though, didn’t explain much. We saw brief Mario Kart footage that didn’t show off any advanced NVIDIA tech like DLSS. Digital Foundry speculated that the system might use a lightweight DLSS model tailored for mobile, given the computational demands of NVIDIA’s latest Transformer Model. It will likely launch globally in 2025 and is rumored to appear during a Direct taking place early sometime in April.

After the original Switch’s tremendous success — over 146 million units sold since its 2017 debut — this new system has a lot to live up to. Its would-be simple naming as “Switch 2” avoids the confusion fomented by prior missteps like the Wii U. The Switch 2 is not going for the Steam Deck and other competing handhelds that will offer more raw power; analysts say the Switch will ultimately find its core audience among families and casual gamers.

Nintendo’s launch strategy likely includes exclusive games such as a new Mario Kart and 3D Mario. Backward compatibility will also play a key role, ensuring a seamless transition for existing users. Third-party developers, previously hesitant, are expected to embrace the Switch 2, leveraging it to extend the lifecycle of older titles. With potential collaborations from major studios like EA and Ubisoft, the console promises to deliver a compelling mix of first-party exclusives and third-party titles.
