Newcastle United have submitted an official bid for Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier. The former Tottenham Hotspur man is their top target for the January transfer window, and the Magpies have taken one step further to sealing his signature.
There are rumours that Trippier’s price right now is half of what Atleti wanted during the summer. The main reason behind this is that he has an increasingly limited amount of time remaining on his current deal.
If the right-back returns to England, he would become the highest earner in the Newcastle squad with a salary worth £150,000 per week.
Newcastle United close to signing Kieran Trippier
Here is what Diego Simeone had to say about Trippier potentially leaving the club during the January transfer window:
‘We have always had these situations when very good players have the possibility of leaving.
‘It will depend on what the player wants. We will then look for solutions. He is an important player for our team.’
The England international’s contract runs until June 2023, and Madrid will have one year remaining to sell him in the summer. He has hinted at the fact that he wants to return to England in the past. Manchester United were trying to sign him this summer but failed to match Atletico Madrid’s valuation.
Only a few months removed from then, Newcastle United are set to get his signature with little competition for him right now. The upcoming days will be vital for the deal, as the negotiations between the clubs have started.
