In the Chinese market where Volkswagen introduced and updated new SUV models with a remarkable result in years, the brand has been continuing to be successful on this road. The new results are the Tharu XR, which takes a place between Volkswagen’s T-Cross and Tharu. Slated to become one of Volkswagen’s first all-electric models, the SUV debuts in these teaser photos ahead of its unveiling by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The All New Volkswagen Tharu XR SUV
Though sporting elements inspired by the upcoming VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq that will share its underpinnings, it evokes a stronger resemblance to the stylish crossover coupe VW Tiguan L Pro only on a smaller scale. Up front, there are crisp-looking lighting elements, a single full-width LED light strip connecting them and large bumper inlets, while the rear gets smoking hot tail lamps that seem to have been inspired by the more exotic sibling of the A-Class sedan from Stuttgart.
To be offered in several variants with chrome or black finishing, sourced from the factories of joint venture partner SAIC Volkswagen, the Tharu XR will go on sale later this year. This is especially so since Volkswagen already has a regular Tharu on sale in China, as well, which is also produced locally by SAIC.
The Taigun will be underpinned by the MQB A0 platform that also forms the basis for the Tharu in China, where it is known as the Tharu XR and measures 4,355 mm in length, 1,762 mm in width, and 1,605 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,651 mm. So, it is smaller than the T-Cross and larger than the regular Tharu, resulting in a peculiar placement in the Volkswagen SUV lineup.
The Tharu XR is expected to share engine options with the other two models, which include a 160 PS/250 Nm 1.5-litre turbo petrol and a 7-speed DSG transmission, and the base 115 PS naturally-aspirated mill of similar displacement.
Interior specs are pretty much under wraps as of now, but it could include a panoramic sunroof, electric mirrors and tailgate, leather seats, generous touchscreen infotainment, wireless charging, and cruise control. ESP, traction control, a reverse camera (front and/or rear), rear traffic alert, as well an electronic parking brake with auto hold function will likely be included in the safety features accommodation. Given its size and an expected list of features, the Tharu XR intends to go toe-to-toe with offerings such as Hyundai Creta (ix25 in China) in the Chinese SUV market.
