New Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G, 662 & 460 SoCs launched

The newly launched Snapdragon 720G, 662 & 460 SoCs become the first ones to support ISRO’s NavIC GPS constellation with support for Wi-Fi 6 and improved AI capabilities

Qualcomm has made its formal announcement of its new 4G mobile SoCs targetted for budget devices. The three SoCs include the Snapdragon 720G, Snapdragon 662, and the Snapdragon 460 which supports the new ISRO’s NavIC GPS satellite constellation

These SoCs also offer fast 4G speeds, improved wireless connectivity featuring the new Wi-Fi 6 along with Bluetooth 5.1. They also support Qualcomm FastConnect 6 along with L1 and L5 dual-frequency GNSS.

Apart from performance improvements, we have the support for the Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) GPS constellation system along with other improved AI capabilities.

Last year we saw the Snapdragon 730 and 730G for mid-ranged devices and last month Qualcomm also announced the newer 7nm based Snapdragon 765 & 765G and now we have the new Snapdragon 720G which will be the replacement for the budget devices which previously used the Snapdragon 712 or 710 or 675.

The Snapdragon720G includes the Kryo 465 CPU along with two Cortex A76 cores with up to 2.3GHz and six Cortex A55 cores at up to 1.8GHz and there’s support for Adreno 618 GPU for gaming as well. The SoC even supports HDR content viewing and high-quality video streaming.

Being a gaming-centric SoC, the new 720G features select Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming features and supports HDR gaming and Qualcomm aptX Adaptive. The Spectra 350L ISP supports a maximum resolution of up to 192 MP and 4K video recording support along with 5th generation AI Engine.

The integrated Snapdragon X15 LTE modem supports for 3-carrier aggregation, 4×4 MIMO on two carriers, and 256-QAM modulation for download speed up to 800Mbps.

On the connectivity front, we have the support for Qualcomm Hexagon Tensor Accelerator, FastConnect 6200 Wi-Fi enhancements with WPA3 and Wi-Fi 6 8×8 multi-user MIMO. Also, the SoC supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ technology to support fast charging and USB-PD sources.

Qualcomm’s 6-series SoC got a healthy upgrade in the form of Snapdragon 662 and the SoC features the Spectra 340T ISP that supports triple cameras, HEIF image capture and up to 48-megapixel primary sensor. The chip also supports Qualcomm Charge 3.0 along with support for Dual Charge.

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 SoC has Hexagon 683 support and is powered by the Kryo 260 CPU with four cores of Cortex A73 with up to 2GHz and four cores of Cortex A53 clocked at up to 1.8GHz, coupled with the Adreno 610 GPU.

Also, it features 3rd generation AI Engine with Hexagon Vector Extensions (HVX) enabling support for AI-based night photography, face and voice ID, and use of avatars as well. The Snapdragon 662 supports the Snapdragon X11 LTE mode with 2-CA, 2×2 MIMO, 256-QAM modulation, and download speeds up to 390 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 150Mbps.

The low-budget oriented Snapdragon 450 has been updated to the new Snapdragon 460 and Qualcomm says the SoC offers 70% and 60% improved performance in CPU and GPU front respectively. The SoC even supports Hexagon 683 with Qualcomm Hexagon Vector eXtensions (HVX) and hardware-accelerated TensorFlow Lite for supporting newer user experiences.

Under the hood, the new Snapdragon 460 SoC is equipped with Kryo 240 CPU with dedicated performance cores, paired with Adreno 610 GPU. There is also support for Quick Charge 3.0 along with Dual Charge support. The same integrated Snapdragon X11 LTE modem supports download speeds of up to 390Mbps and upload speeds of up to 150Mbps.

For the first time, we get some AI features in this 4-series SoC as well featuring the 3rd generation Qualcomm AI Engine that includes HVX and the Spectra 340 ISP that supports triple rear cameras, along with 25-megapixel primary sensor. 

Talking about the availability of these chips, the Snapdragon 720G will be available in Q1 2020 and Xiaomi will be the first to launch a Snapdragon a 720G-powered smartphone and Realme will too launch its smartphone as well. The devices powered by Snapdragon 662 and 460 will be seen towards the end of this year.

At the Qualcomm event, we saw representatives from Realme, Xiaomi and OnePlus as well so we can expect devices from these manufacturers in the near future as well.

Even though Qualcomm is leveraging its 5G capabilities worldwide but in a 5G-less country like India, it is focusing to improve its 4G based chipsets and provide better functionalities to a wider audience. Hopefully, with these new SoCs, we will be getting better budget smartphones in the coming days.
