New mini-LED shipments will begin in Q3 2021 for the new MacBook Pro by Apple supplier

According to DigiTimes, Apple supplier Global Lighting Technologies will begin shipping mini-LED display components for next-generation MacBook Pro models in the third quarter of 2021, who cited industry sources.

Apple has been rumoured to have new 14-inch and 16-inch Mini-LED MacBook Pro notebooks in the works for months now; each version also expected to offer an upgraded Apple M1 chip for even more impressive performance.

The laptops are expected to feature a new design with a flatter top and bottom and more ports, including the return of an HDMI port, SD card slot, and magnetic power cable. Rumours also suggest that the Touch Bar will be phased out in favour of the physical Fn keys. A new industrial design is also expected to feature when the new machines ship.

The mini-LED technology delivers higher brightness and deeper contrasts by using diodes smaller than 0.2mm in size than traditional LCD MacBook Pros have been able to, which could be a big deal for people who use their notebooks image and video work.

The mini-LED panels will also enable HDR through local dimming. That is why the advanced display tech is expensive and likely to delay mini LEDs adaption across devices. There’s still no concrete information on when we can expect Apple to begin getting these displays into machines and then into the hands of users, however.
