The Netherlands defeated the USA 3-1 in their World Cup Round of 16 game to earn a spot in the quarter finals. The Oranje are unbeaten in their last 19 games since June 2021, which excludes World Cup shootouts.

The USMNT were ambitious to take the fight to their opponents, but Memphis Depay scored early to dampen their hopes. A resolute defence from them allowed the USA little opportunities to break through.

Memphis Depay scored after a sequence of 20 uninterrupted passes for the Dutch, their highest ever tally leading up to a goal at the World Cup. And with the strike, he has become the second-highest scorer for his country behind only Robin Van Persie.

Denzel Dumfries had a very impressive game, assisting two goals before scoring the third for the Netherlands. He was awarded the man of the match trophy as a result, and fully deserved it for the work he put in.

The USA thought they had a lifeline after Haji Wright’s spiffed tap-in found the back of the net. But, Dumfries ensured that there was no way back, with a 81st minute strike to seal the win. The Netherlands will now face Argentina in the quarter finals of the World Cup, in probably their most difficult fixture yet.
