India’s Neeraj Chopra today created history by winning a gold medal. He threw the javelin to a distance of 88.06 metres at the Asian Games 2018.

Neeraj Chopra won gold in the men’s javelin throw event at the ongoing 18th edition of the Asian Games in Indonesia. Chopra looked confident from the start with a throw of 83.46 m. But it was in his third attempt that he stole the show with a monstrous 88.06m to win the gold medal. And with it he broke the national record. His second throw was declined by the officials. But that did not deter the 20-year-old from throwing 83.25m and 86.26m in his fourth and fifth attempt respectively.

This is India’s second gold medal in athletics and eighth overall. This is India’s 41st medal at the Asian Games this year. India now have 8 gold, 13 silver and 20 bronze.

Chopra has been in fine form coming into the 18th edition of the Asian Games. He was named the flag bearer of the nation as well. The throw was also his personal best, overshadowing his previous best distance of 87.43 metres at the IAAF Diamond League in Doha.

This was also India’s first-ever gold medal in javelin throw at the Asian Games. And the first medal in the sport since 1982, where India bagged bronze.
