Napoli’s impossible Champions League dream is now over, after they bowed out against AC Milan. The Azzurri were defeated 2-1 on aggregate, with the second leg ending 1-1.
Following a remarkable run in the group stage through the Round of 16, many were ambitious of seeing Napoli in the finals. However, their journey in Europe’s top flight has ended in front of their home crowd at the last eight.
Napoli eliminated at quarter finals of the Champions League
Luciano Spalletti’s side were without two of their most influential players in the big game. Kim Min Jae and Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa were both suspended following the first leg, and their presence could have made a big difference in the return leg.
Olivier Giroud had a chance to make it 2-0 for Milan early in the game from the penalty spot. But he was denied by Alex Meret. Giroud would eventually score right before half time to double their lead on aggregate.
Napoli should have had a penalty in the first half owing to a strong tackle from Rafael Leao. But, even a VAR check didn’t give them the opportunity to score from the spot. They would eventually have it late in the game following a handball, but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was denied by Mike Maignan, who dove the right way.
The returning Victor Osimhen would eventually score very late in the game, but it was too little, too late for the Partenopei to salvage the game.
The absence of two very important players, and some unlucky decisions ultimately ended Napoli’s hopes of progressing to the semi-finals. However, they have a historic Serie A title to look forward to in just a few weeks.
Milan, on the other hand, could face their local rivals Inter in the semifinals if they can beat Benfica.
