The defending champions of the ISL, Mumbai City FC, began their 21/22 campaign with a 3-0 win over rivals FC Goa. Igor Angulo scored twice against his former team in the game alongside Ygor Catatau.
Vignesh Dakshinamurthy had to be taken off 17 minutes into the game due to an injury. Leander D’Cunha was let off for the foul that caused the wing-back to be taken off.
Ivan Gonzalez’s mistimed tackle caused the Islanders to be awarded a penalty shortly after the cooling break. Angulo made no mistake from the spot as he opened his scoring account for the ongoing season. Shortly after, the Spaniard doubled up with a shot from the outside of his left foot ending up in the back of the net, beating former teammate Dheeraj Singh.
Raynier Fernandes, the provider of the second goal, could have had a third for the team before half time but his shot ricocheted off the bar.
After poor marking by Goa, Ygor Catatau scored his first goal for Mumbai City FC on his debut. The player headed in a free-kick after being unmarked for his run near the end of the box.
Mumbai City FC have begun their campaign with a three-goal margin and are now at the top of the table. They take on Hyderabad FC in their next match in the ISL. FC Goa, on the other hand, take on Jamshedpur FC with both teams looking for their first win in the league.
