European giants Real Madrid has won their record-breaking 35th La Liga title this season. Real Madrid won 4-0 against Espanyol at home as Los Blancos only needed one point to confirm the 2021/22 league title for themselves.

Carlo Ancelotti decided to rest his most important players ahead of the huge Champions League clash in mid-week against Manchester City. Despite a heavily rotated squad, they came away with all three points.

Economic reward for winning La Liga

However, winning the La Liga title does not have a direct economic reward but it does give an advantage during the distribution of money from the television rights.

According to the criteria set out in Royal Decree-Law 5/2015, approved unanimously in Congress, 25% of the distribution of money from the television rights is based on the position of each team at the end of the season.

A further 25% of the TV rights is for the social impact (each club’s revenue in season tickets and average box office income over the last five seasons and each club’s share in the generation of resources from the commercialisation of TV broadcasts), while 50% is shared equally between the 20 teams of the league.

Let’s take a further look at the 25% that is distributed based on the position of each team in the La Liga table at the end of the season.

According to article five of Royal Decree-Law 5/2015, the champions get 17% of this total. Considering the amount of money that was distributed last year for television rights among the 20 LaLiga Santander clubs which is 1.44 billion euros, 25% is 361 million euros. And 17% of that 361 million euros is 61.2 million euros.

How much money will Real Madrid get for winning the La Liga this season?

Real Madrid will receive around 61 million euros from television rights for winning the LaLiga Santander title.

However, the law states that these earnings will be distributed over five seasons, with those obtained in the last season being weighted at 35%, in the penultimate season at 20% and 15% for each of the three last seasons. Real Madrid will therefore receive 35% of the 60 million euros next season and in the following seasons – 20%, 15%, 15% and 15%.

In the upcoming season, along with the 35% of the 61 million euros, Real Madrid will also receive 20% for second place in the 2020/21 season, 15% for first place in the 2019/20 season, 15% for third place in the 2018/19 season and 15% for third place in the 2017/18 season.
