The CFL remains one of the most hotly contested city leagues in India, and Mohun Bagan SG have just let their arch rivals get a walkover in the Kolkata derby. The CFL Super Six game between the two icons of Indian football was scheduled to be played at the Naihati Stadium on November 30 at 2pm.
But earlier, Mohun Bagan had mentioned in a letter to the IFA that they would be unable to play the game due to scheduling conflicts. And now, East Bengal have received a walkover victory after waiting for 30 minutes with the Mariners nowhere to be found.
Mohun Bagan SG absence allows East Bengal to have a walkover in CFL
The Super Six Kolkata Derby would have been the first match for the Mariners since their loss against Mohammedan Sporting, which led to the latter’s coronation as the title winners.
“Because of the ineffective scheduling by IFA we have been given to understand most of the teams in Super Six skipped their games as other tournaments (have) started, (and it) questions total sanity of the CFL,” Bagan said in a letter addressed to IFA secretary Anirban Dutta according to TOI.
And in response to their hectic schedule, they decided not to appear for the CFL clash. This is the seventh time that a team has had a walkover win in the tournament, and it happens as a repeat of the 2016 CFL Kolkata Derby, after which East Bengal went on to win the title.
