‘Mohun Bagan Day’ is celebrated on 29th July every year to commemorate the team’s famous IFA Shield triumph in 1911. Mohun Bagan defeated East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1 to become the first Indian club to end the British stranglehold on the tournament.

The 1911 triumph is seen as a huge moment in India’s freedom struggle at the time. It gave hope to the Indian people that the British could be defeated. The win was for all the Indians and not just for the 11 barefooted Indian footballers who bravely played against their British opponent.

Mohun Bagan, one of the most iconic Indian clubs was founded in 1889. The 131-year-old club got one of the best gifts when it got featured on NASDAQ billboards in New York’s Times Square. The club becomes the country’s first-ever sports entity to feature on NASDAQ billboards.

Mohun Bagan’s top official Debashis Dutta told PTI: “It is a matter of great pride for all Mohun Bagan fans and supporters. It shows the kind of stature the club enjoys. No Indian sports club has ever featured on something like this, so it is significant, very different.”

Mohun Bagan has merged with 3 times ISL winner ATK from this year. They will play in ISL from the next season with a new name ‘ATK Mohun Bagan FC’.
