Brentford have confirmed the signing of Mikkel Damsgaard from Sampdoria for a transfer fee worth £16.7 million. The attacking midfielder has signed a contract until June 2027 with the Bees amidst interest from several other clubs.
The 22-year-old is the sixth Danish player available under Thomas Frank. He will be replacing Christian Eriksen in the squad, who moved on to Manchester United after spending six months with them.
Mikkel Damsgaard signs for Brentford
Here is what Thomas Frank said about his new signing: “Mikkel is, in my opinion, another classic Brentford signing. He is a young player with big potential to develop further. We know we can help Mikkel reach his highest level, we have the staff here that have experience in doing that and we are looking forward to working with him.
The coach also acknowledged his injury-ridden 21/22 season, and is hopeful of him bouncing back:
“He has been unlucky with injuries in the past year, but we have already seen that he is an extremely skilful player, who can run with the ball and move it well. He is aware of the space around him and plays on the half turn. He also wants to play forward and can do so by either passing or dribbling.”
Mikkel Damsgaard will be able to play as an eight or a ten in the 4-3-3 line-up. He is expected to make the squad for Brentford’s second Premier League match this weekend against Manchester United.
