Micron and MediaTek collaborate to get their LPDDR5X on the market

In recent news, MediaTek Inc. has just verified Micron’s low-power double data rate 5X (LPDDR5X) DRAM for its new Dimensity 9000 5G flagship chipset for smartphones. Micron has sent the first batch of LPDDR5X samples based on its first-to-market 1 (1-alpha) node, making it the first semiconductor manufacturer to sample and validate this fastest, most advanced mobile memory in the industry.

Micron’s LPDDR5X memory, which is designed for high-end and flagship smartphones, enables the smartphone ecosystem to unlock the next generation of data-intensive apps enabled by artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G innovation.

This is the industry-first introduction for LPDDR5, 1-based LPDDR4X, 176-layer NAND-based UFS 3.1, and uMCP5 solutions, Micron’s industry-leading 1-based LPDDR5X shows its product innovation and leadership in the mobile ecosystem.

This latest achievement comes soon after JEDEC’s July release of the LPDDR5X extension to LPDDR5, which provides increased bandwidth and memory speed for improved 5G connectivity and performance while conserving power. Micron has verified samples capable of data speeds up to 7.5 Gb/s, with samples capable of 8.533 Gb/s on the way.

Innovating cutting-edge smartphone experiences requires memory technology built to address the massive bandwidth demands of the mobile market. Our collaboration with MediaTek to validate the world’s most advanced mobile memory empowers the ecosystem to deliver the next wave of rich mobile features enhanced by 5G and AI,” said Raj Talluri, senior vice president and general manager of Micron’s Mobile Business Unit.

These increased levels of memory performance are important for feeding enormous volumes of data to today’s complicated smartphone systems on chips’ numerous heterogeneous processing engines (SoCs). These advanced SoCs need high data rates to maintain seamless multitasking across applications and to allow AI inferencing, augmented and virtual reality, and immersive graphics as mobile workloads become more sophisticated.

Our mobile customers are increasingly demanding higher bandwidth to support complex, data-hungry applications built for the 5G era. With its superfast mobile memory, Micron’s LPDDR5X squarely meets this challenge for flagship devices. The Density 9000 will be the first to support this critical advancement of LPDDR5X, giving carriers and device-makers the capabilities they need to deliver incredible 5G experiences at the flagship tier,” said JC Hsu, corporate vice president and general manager of the Wireless Communications Business Unit at MediaTek.
