### The Dream Cast

Michael B. Jordan — the newly minted best actor Oscar winner — will star as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, with Oscar nominee Austin Butler playing James “Sonny” Crockett. The roles were originated by [Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami_Vice) in the iconic NBC series that ran from 1984 to 1990, before Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx took them to the big screen in 2006.

Both stars are arriving at absolute career peaks. Jordan won the Academy Award, SAG-AFTRA’s Actor Award and two NAACP Awards for his dual performance in Ryan Coogler’s blockbuster *Sinners*. Meanwhile, Butler has built one of the most impressive filmmaker collaboration lists in Hollywood, working with Baz Luhrmann, Denis Villeneuve, Jeff Nichols, Darren Aronofsky, and Ari Aster.

### What the Film Is About

The film explores the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami in an all-new version of *Miami Vice*, inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style in everything from fashion to filmmaking.

The story follows Tubbs, an undercover detective from New York, who heads to Miami to find Calderone — the drug kingpin who murdered his brother.

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Dan Gilroy penned the script, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the TV series.

### Why This Is a Big Deal

Joseph Kosinski directing a neon-drenched, IMAX-shot 1980s crime thriller with arguably the two hottest actors in Hollywood right now is the kind of alignment that only happens once in a while. If *Top Gun: Maverick* taught us anything, it’s that Kosinski knows exactly how to make legacy IP feel thrillingly alive again.
