Mexico have confirmed that winger Jesus Corona will not be able to compete at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The player moved to Sevilla from Portuguese side Porto this summer, and sustained an ankle injury in August during a training session.

However, he hasn’t been able to recover in time, and will miss out on the trip to the Middle East. “Mexican national-team staff will continue to monitor his progress, and we hope that Jesús enjoys a swift, successful return to action,” an FMF statement said

Jesus Corona to miss the 2022 World Cup with ankle injury

The 29-year-old will be missing out on the trip alongside five other players from the 31-player preliminary squad. The final travelling squad announcement is expected on Monday, November 14.

The news had been expected for a while, and it has now been confirmed in an official statement by Mexico as well. It now remains to be seen how quickly Jesus Corona can return to action following the World Cup.

He joins the likes of Sadio Mane, Reece James, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell to miss out on the tournament due to an injury sustained in recent days. The World Cup will begin on November 20, with the hosts Qatar in action against Ecuador.
