Messi was offered a late deal from Atletico Madrid prior to PSG signing

Lionel Messi was confirmed as a PSG player yesterday, with the French club announcing the signing of Messi until 2023, with the option for another year. The former Barcelona captain has taken up the number 30 shirt for the Parisians.

Movistar journalist Ignacio Miguelez has claimed that Messi was considering a move to Atletico Madrid to reunite with Luis Suarez prior to joining PSG. The six-time Ballon d’Or award winner reportedly spoke to Diego Simeone about possibly staying in Spain but switching to the capital club.

The offer from Atletico Madrid came in late, and Messi was strongly tempted by the chance to play alongside his best friend once again. However, PSG gave him a better financial offer, one of the greatest squads to ever be assembled and the chance to claim the Champions League once again. And so, the Argentine forward decided to make the move to Ligue 1 instead.

Suarez and Messi were part of the iconic MSN trio and continued together after the departure of Neymar as well. The two players scored a combined 478 goals and lifted 13 trophies together since Suarez was signed in 2014. He was sent off to Atletico Madrid for free since Ronald Koeman deemed him surplus to his requirements in 2020.

However, Suarez finished as the second highest scorer in La Liga and also helped the Rojiblancos lift the league club at the end of the season. Messi now reunites with Neymar, fulfilling the desires of the Brazilian, which he spoke about last season.
