With his goal against Real Valladolid in La Liga, Lionel Messi managed to break the record set by Pele for the most goals scored for a single club, with 644 goals for the only club the Argentinian has ever played professional football for.

Last week, Messi managed to equal the record set by the legendary Brazilian, and has managed to smash the record in only the very next match. Here is what La Pulga had to say via his Instagram account:

“When I started playing soccer I never thought I would break any records. And even less the one that I achieved today that I had @pele … I can only thank everyone who helped me over the years, my teammates, my family, my friends and everyone who supports me every day. Hug!!” translated from Spanish, posted by Messi on his official Instagram handle.

While Lionel Messi has had an uncharacteristically shaky start to the 20/21 season, he finally looks to be on his way back to his old self with good performances in his recent games.

There is still plenty of speculation regarding the player’s future. His contract at Barcelona expires in about 6 months, and he will be allowed to talk to clubs regarding a pre-contract agreement during the January transfer window.

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are the two clubs that can afford to have the superstar’s wages on their books. And they will be looking to lure the 5-time Ballon d’Or winner away from Barcelona with the current uncertainty regarding his future looming stronger than ever.
