MediaTek has launched the Dimensity 8400 processor at an event in China and this is the entry of the firm in the mid-range chipset segment. This comes after the Dimensit 9400 flagship hit the market in October, going into both high-end smartphones in China and abroad. As the successor to last year’s Dimensity 8300, the Dimensity 8400 uses an “all big core” design like the Dimensity 9400, forgoing smaller, energy-efficient cores for greater performance.

The new Dimensity 8400 uses eight ARM Cortex-A725 cores. One core runs at 3.25GHz, three core runs at 3.0GHz, and the rest four run at 2.1GHz. This architecture provides 41% better multi-core performance and 44% better power consumption than the previous generation, according to MediaTek. There is a 1.3GHz ARM Mali-G720 MC6 GPU on the graphics side, we also get an update over the Dimensity 8300, which had a Mali-G615 MC6. It also packs MediaTek’s Frame Rate Converter and Adaptive Gaming Technology to support gameplay performance and stability.

On the AI front, the chipset is powered by MediaTek’s NPU 880 which includes support for the latest LLM and LMM models. This allows for AI rewriting, contextual responses, media generation, AI recording, translation, and other features. The chip also adopts the company’s advanced DAE technology, which debuted with the premium Dimensity 9400, enabling developers to build smart AI apps.

The Dimensity 8400 also features support for up to 320MP camera sensors and an Imagiq 1080 ISP for high-res shots. It provides HDR recording for the full zoom range. It also supports WQHD+ displays at up to 144Hz refresh rates and offers dual-screen support. A 5G-Advanced modem provides connectivity with peak downlink speeds of 5.17 Gbps.

MediaTek confirmed that devices with the Dimensity 8400 will be available by late 2024. A launch is expected in early 2025, with Xiaomi as the first manufacturer to confirm the Redmi Turbo 4 will be the first phone to be powered by this chipset. Additionally, one of the Realme smartphones is set to get that Dimensity 8400 chip as well — the company has also confirmed that.
