Paris Saint-Germain ended their group stage campaign with a strong win against Belgian outfit Club Brugge. The Parisians hosted the game, and scored four to win it by a three goal margin. Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi netted two goals each to see the French club over the line.
By scoring a double, Mbappe has broken one of Messi’s long-standing records in the Champions League. The Frenchman, aged 22 years and 352 days is now the youngest player ever to score 30 goals in the Champions League. He has surpassed Messi, who was at 23 years and 131 days when he achieved the same feat.
Kylian Mbappe has four goals and as many assists in the Champions League this season, and is shaping up to be one of the next big players in the competition. Despite PSG’s big win and Manchester City’s loss to RB Leipzig in the final game of the group stage, the former have finished second in the group behind City.Ā
Erling Haaland is the only other player who can realistically match Mbappe’s record. The Norwegian sensation has 23 goals in the Champions League, and will have to compete in the Europa League with Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the season.
Given the goalscoring record that the 21-year-old has had over the last few years, we wouldn’t be surprised if he surpasses Kylian Mbappe next season. It also remains to be seen whether he will be at Borussia Dortmund next year or if he’ll be a teammate of Mbappe at Real Madrid.
