Maxwell on his Innings Against Afghanistan: “There was certain planning, it wasn’t all just chaotic swinging”

On Tuesday, Glenn Maxwell delivered an extraordinary performance at the Wankhede Stadium, guiding Australia to an improbable three-wicket victory over Afghanistan. This win not only ensured Australia’s spot in the ICC World Cup 2023 semifinals but also dealt a blow to Afghanistan’s top-four aspirations. Despite battling cramps, Maxwell displayed exceptional resilience, scoring an unbeaten 201 runs from 128 balls, featuring 21 boundaries and 10 sixes. Shortly after his remarkable innings, Maxwell shared insights about his performance in an exclusive media interview, just under an hour after struggling up the Wankhede Stadium steps.

Regarding his Immediate Post-game Emotions

Immediately after the game, Glenn Maxwell expressed his feelings, describing it as quite exhausting. He mentioned that the reality of the victory hadn’t fully set in yet, and he was momentarily at a loss for words. He highlighted the joy of securing a spot in the semi-finals and the enjoyable partnership with Pat.

They kept each other calm with jokes throughout the match. Maxwell shared a lighthearted moment where Pat remarked that the opposition would have an extra fielder in the last four overs. Their goal was to maintain a relaxed atmosphere despite the challenging circumstances. Maxwell acknowledged the element of luck in their victory, as they had a few close calls and missed opportunities, making it a truly special night.

Concerning When He Collapsed with Cramps and the Possibility of Having to Leave the Field

I initially thought, ‘well, that’s the end of our running.’ It was an unusual experience because I began cramping in one of my toes, which extended up the front of my shin. As I attempted to move to the other end, I started cramping in that calf as well. So, I found myself with cramps on both sides of my lower leg. To make matters even more interesting, just as I thought, ‘oh no, I’m cramping,’ I simultaneously cramped in my left hamstring. It was like a cramp party in both my legs. And to top it off, I had a back spasm when I hit the ground. (chuckles) So, my entire body was in pain.

However, once I managed to calm my breathing and had the physiotherapist out there talking me through it, things started to look a bit more manageable. There were two people assisting me, with one pushing my foot and the other lifting my leg. It was a strange situation; I had never experienced full-body cramps like that before.”

I had a feeling it might happen a few hours earlier, but I was hoping to push through. Staying at the same end for a couple of overs allowed me to regain some mobility. Surprisingly, it simplified things for me. I wasn’t overthinking the situation; I just knew that if I got a ball I could hit, I would go for it.

Whether He Believed He Might Have to Retire due to Injury

We did consider the option of coming off the field to address the issue. We discussed the possibility of working on my back and attempting to loosen up my legs. The team physio, Jonesy, expressed concerns about my ability to come back down the stairs if I left the field at that point.

Ultimately, we decided on a simpler approach: to stay at the same end for as long as possible until I felt confident enough to walk to the other end or take an easy single when available. The focus was on getting one or two boundaries from one end, and the scoring rate at that stage was approximately one run per ball. There was actually a plan in place; it wasn’t just random swinging of the bat.”

His ‘Penguin’ Walk as He Made his Way Between the Wickets

In one instance, Rashid attempted to stop the ball with his foot, and it rolled towards long-on. In that moment, I thought, ‘I can make it to the other end.’ I had to keep my legs as straight as possible to achieve this. Someone likened it to the walking style of Jane Saville during a 40-kilometer walk or something along those lines. We had a couple of overs where we both remained at the same end for a while, which provided a much-needed breather.”

I managed to hydrate between overs, and it felt like they were taking their time between deliveries. It didn’t seem like we were excessively delaying the game, although there’s always that risk when you’re dealing with such a situation.

On What Point Maxwell Believe that The Task was Achievable

Patty remained remarkably composed throughout. When the required runs were around 60 or 70, I started thinking that if we could have two more decent overs, each yielding about 15 runs, we would be in a balanced position. I was aware that Rashid still had around 18 balls to bowl out of the last 13 overs. “

My strategy was to keep him at bay while focusing on scoring boundaries against the other bowlers. It was primarily about neutralizing Rashid’s threat since he’s a world-class spinner capable of various tricks, including hitting the pads and beating both sides of the bat. I believed that if we could effectively handle Rashid, we would have a good chance.”

On the Fortunate Turn of Events When He was Initially Given Out LBW and Believed He was Out for Sure

It felt like a sure dismissal. My main focus was to protect my stumps, so I was constantly adjusting my position in defense, not minding whether I inside-edged or outside-edged the ball, as long as I safeguarded the stumps. However, the line my front foot took was just slightly off, and my bat wasn’t in the right position. The ball turned perfectly and narrowly evaded the inside edge.

I was incredibly frustrated with myself. Right away, Patty mentioned, ‘I think that’s going over the top, and it actually bounced quite a bit, plus you were quite far forward.’ I wasn’t entirely convinced, as it didn’t feel like a good situation at the time. Nevertheless, that moment served as a wake-up call, pushing me to be more aggressive and proactive in making the bowlers deliver wider deliveries and keep the ball away from the stumps. That’s when I started employing slog sweeps and exploring different positions around the crease.

Reflecting on the Events of the Past Two Weeks, Including the Golf Cart Incident and Now This

These past few weeks have been quite eventful, especially since my family arrived. It’s been a bit unusual, but I’m incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to compete and make it to the semifinals. After the first two games, many had already counted us out, but to put together six consecutive wins when it mattered most is truly satisfying. Even though we didn’t perform at our best tonight against a spirited opposition, it feels great to be in the semis. I hope we can savor a few days in Pune, and as for the golf carts, I’ll definitely steer clear of them.

When Asked if the Situation has Fully Sunk in and if He’ll be Fit for the Next Match

It’s a pretty cool feeling. Right now, it’s all so fresh that I haven’t fully processed it yet. It was an enjoyable experience, and it felt like Patty and I were just having a good time out there. I’ll likely take some time in the next few days to reflect on it and hopefully recover while working on regaining movement in my hamstrings and calves.
