Via Badische Zeitung Matthias Ginter: Wechsel zum BVB nicht perfekt - SC Freiburg - Badische Zeitung

Matthias Ginter will be rejoining his boyhood club, Freiburg at the end of the ongoing season. The centre-back’s contract with Borussia Monchengladbach runs out at the end of the season, and he has already announced that he will not renew his contract to pursue a new challenge.

The club has officially announced his return on their official website. Several other top clubs like Aston Villa, Bayern Munich and Italian clubs were in the race to sign the player, but he opted to return to his hometown and represent the club with whom he started his senior career.

“I wanted to do something else special in my career, and there’s nothing more special for me than returning home to Freiburg,” Ginter told the club’s website. “The development of the whole club, the potential of the team and the manner of the exchange with the club in recent weeks – finding all that in my hometown can only be described as a stroke of luck nowadays.”

The 28-year-old will be the replacement for Nico Schlotterbeck, who will be leaving for Borussia Dortmund once the season is over. Matthias Ginter himself played for Dortmund when he first left Freiburg in 2014. After two years with them, he went on to feature for Monchengladbach, and will now return back to where it all started for him.

Dortmund have signed two key defensive players, with Germany internationals Niklas Sule as well as Schlotterbeck making the move to the Black and Yellow club in the transfer window.
