Gerard Pique is considering the possibility of retiring at the end of the season. Injury problems, consistent criticism from fans and a lack of form have resulted in the 34-year-old wondering about his future.

Xavi is being strongly rumoured as the man to replace Ronald Koeman in the Barcelona dugout. The 41-year-old could convince his former teammate to play for another year. But, at some point, the defender will need to be phased out after a long and successful spell.

As a result, the Blaugrana have identified the potential replacement for Pique. Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter is at the top of the transfer list for the Spanish giants.

The Germany international’s contract runs out at the end of the season, and he will be available on a free transfer. Talks of a new deal are not going between the player and the club, and it seems like he will be walking out for free. Barca president Joan Laporta has already held initial talks with his agent to test the waters about a potential move.

But, Barcelona are not the only club interested in his services. His former club Borussia Dortmund, and Bayern Munich are monitoring the situation of the defender. Being a German, a chance to play for Bayern will have a big appeal for the 27-year-old.

But, Laporta could convince Ginter to join with the promise of regular Champions League football and a starting berth in the first team.
