Google has begun talks about Android 12 at the Google I/O developer conference, and Matias Duarte just announced Material You, a new method to tailor Google’s products. It’s a play on Duarte’s Material Design, which he first launched for Android in 2014. Users will be able to choose from customizable palettes for the system and apps, rather than Google prescribing the color palette for all of its applications.

Your favorite designs will accompany you from your phone to the web, Chrome OS, wearables, smart displays, and “all of Google’s devices,” according to Duarte. It will first be available on Pixel phones and Google apps, with OS, and other platforms to follow later. It places a stronger emphasis on making full use of all possible screen space.

The new design language incorporates the latest UI components from Google’s current Material Design standard, while also reintroducing color, which has been lacking from many apps for the past few years. The color returning would presumably be a great sight for android. Material You, according to Duarte, isn’t only about colors; it also considers accessibility. To customize the visual appearance to meet your needs, you can alter elements like contrast, size, line width, and other aspects. Third-party apps will now be able to access your Material You preferences.

As part of his Android 12 briefing, Google’s Sameer Samat revealed a few more bits of information on how this visual overhaul will operate. As stated by him, the system will evaluate your wallpaper using “color extraction” technology to determine dominant, complementary, and vibrant colors. These colors are then applied to the notification shade, lockscreen, widgets, and other areas of the OS.

Matias Duarte’s statements also included that, “given how rapidly Material Design expanded from Android to all of Google’s products, we anticipate this shift will be rapid as well. If you can’t wait until the fall to try it out, the Android 12 public beta is available now.”
