Mason Mount is the second-best Chelsea attacking midfielder

Mason Mount scored a crucial goal in Chelsea’s season, grabbing the first-half opener for the Blues against Porto in the Champions League this past matchday. The youngster is finally getting the praise he so rightfully deserves, and the stats show that he is not the first, but the second best-attacking midfielder in the Chelsea squad.

While a stat like minutes per goal involvement leaves him stranded, comparing his 240 minutes per G/A to his teammates Ziyech (180.1), Kai Havertz (186.4) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (186.8), the bigger picture must be considered. And that in this case is the chances that he creates.

Considering that Chelsea’s forwards have been especially wasteful this season, the chances created also become very valuable. In this case, he creates a chance every 33.5 minutes in contrast to Hudson-Odoi (46.7), Havertz (66.6) and Pulisic (83.8). Additionally, loanees Barkley (40.7) and Loftus-Cheek (113) are also off Mount’s pace.

Moving on to Mount’s England rivals, he is second only to Grealish (26.2) in terms of minutes per chance created this season. Maddison (38.3), Foden (42.9) and Lingard (55.4) trail behind those two. De Bruyne is the Premier League’s best in this department, creating a chance every 25.2 minutes for his City teammates, while Fernandes isn’t far behind, and again ahead of Mount, at 31.7.

Mount’s tireless work rate, attitude on the pitch and dedication is something that the stats don’t pick up and that is something that his managers and fellow teammates take into account which makes him so much more valuable than just numbers.
