After a thorough internal investigation, Manchester United have confirmed that Mason Greenwood will leave the club after agreeing a departure mutually. The player has also offered a statement about the issue, in which he has revealed his explanation for his departure.
Greenwood was charged with a number of crimes including domestic abuse and attempted rape. But, the case was dropped earlier this year and is reportedly expecting a child with his partner, who had filed the case.
Mason Greenwood leaves Manchester United after lengthy investigation
The Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case since there was no conclusive evidence which would have presented a prospect of conviction. He has trained at Carrington over the summer, but will now be released in spite of having two years remaining on his deal.
“Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged. That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for,” Manchester United said in a statement.
“All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”
Massive public backlash over the prospect of Mason Greenwood playing for United again was one of the main reasons why he was released. Manchester United will assist Greenwood in finding a new club, as they revealed in their statement.
