After nearly two years of anticipation, Insomniac Games has finally provided fans with their first peek at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gameplay, and it’s a sight to behold. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 offers a host of new skills and systems, and that’s just from what fans have seen so far. It takes the foundations built by its two predecessors and expands on them in some seemingly huge ways.
In its very lengthy gameplay reveal trailer, Spider-Man 2 disclosed not only that players would be exploring new areas of New York, such as Queens, but also that they’ll be able to play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, seemingly switching between the two during crucial story moments.
Another major indication from the gameplay footage for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was that Peter Parker will be donning the Symbiote suit during the game, giving him a slew of new, lethal abilities. However, there are a few additional new features in Spider-Man 2 teasers that demonstrate how much Insomniac values user feedback.
According to the first gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the series’ traversal mechanics are getting some much-needed updates
Marvel’s Spider-Man, released in 2018, was a great game that nailed the experience of being Spider-Man just as effectively as Batman: Arkham captured the essence of its namesake. The game’s agile traversal features, which let players swing through New York City with ease, zipping between buildings and launching off roofs to their hearts’ content, are a significant reason for this. But, while Spider-Man’s web-swinging seemed terrific at the time, it’s aged a little over the years, and for some fans, it’s become a touch too slow.
Insomniac appears to have listened to its fans here, as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 appears to improve on the series’ traversal mechanics in a few significant ways. After a brief introduction to Kraven the Hunter and a dramatic combat sequence with the Symbiote-suited Peter Parker, the gameplay footage for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 switches viewpoints to Miles Morales, who appears to be a little more seasoned this time around.
The upgrades to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s traversal mechanics can be evident almost immediately, with Miles rapidly employing a fresh new maneuver called the Super Slingshot. This Super Slingshot move, like previous Spider-Man games, has Spider-Man web onto two parallel poles, draw himself back and use the resulting force to hurl himself through the skies.
While players in Spider-Man and Miles Morales may slingshot over buildings, it pales in comparison to the tremendous speed this Super Slingshot appears to provide in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Miles then adopts another new traversal approach, this time a full-fledged wingsuit, to glide between buildings at a very quick pace. Miles then enters a wind tunnel between buildings, allowing him to speed around New York.
Following a brief encounter with the Lizard, both Spider-Men find themselves outside, pursuing him as well as some of Kraven’s goons through New York City’s neighboring rivers. Fans get their first true glimpse at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s upgraded web-swinging in this video. Though the mechanics and animations appear to be relatively similar to the previous two games, it appears that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has significantly faster web-swinging than its predecessors, with Miles launching himself through the air incredibly swiftly after each swing.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches this fall, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
