Marvel has always selected the directors for their films with great care, paying attention to details that might seem inconsequential to others.
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) gradually moves towards a new ‘Avengers’ film, the director’s chair for this project is one of the most coveted positions in the entire film industry. Marvel already has a top favorite in mind.

Shawn Levy: The Top Pick for Directing the New ‘Avengers’ Film
Shawn Levy has become the leading candidate to direct the new ‘Avengers’ film. Kevin Feige has already selected him to helm ‘Wolverine and Deadpool,’ a film tasked with revitalizing the MCU. If this film meets its high expectations, Feige would have no doubts about Levy being the ideal person to bring success to their most ambitious project yet.
According to the American portal Deadline, the director has already received the script for the film but has not yet fully committed to the project. These uncertainties have prompted Marvel to explore other potential candidates, although they have made it clear that if Levy agrees, the director’s position is his.
The doubts surrounding the ‘Wolverine and Deadpool’ director stem from his busy schedule. Levy is currently involved in the final season of ‘Stranger Things’ and has also been mentioned as a potential director for a new ‘Star Wars’ film. With so many commitments, taking on another film that needs to be completed by mid-2026 might be challenging.
Deadline reports that Levy has received the latest script from Michael Waldron, but sources indicate that he has not yet decided whether to take the job. The studio is still planning to meet with other directors while awaiting his decision. Marvel Studios could not be reached for comment.
There have been four Avengers blockbusters: two directed by Joss Whedon (The Avengers grossing $1.5 billion in 2012 and The Avengers: Age of Ultron grossing $1.4 billion) and two by Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Infinity War grossing $2.05 billion and Avengers: Endgame grossing $2.8 billion, making it the highest-grossing film of all time upon its 2019 release until James Cameron’s Avatar reclaimed the title with $2.9 billion after re-releases).
Marvel’s Ambitious Avengers Project: A Diverse Cast and Directorial Uncertainties
Even without a confirmed director and with the script only recently completed, Marvel has been working diligently in recent months to prepare for shooting next year on one of its largest productions to date. Sources close to the project indicate that over 60 MCU characters could reprise their roles, including Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu, and Karen Gillan. Unlike the first four films, which focused on a core group of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Hemsworth, and Ruffalo, this new film is expected to feature a more balanced ensemble cast with many characters having equal importance.
Plot details remain undisclosed, and with Jonathan Majors’ departure from the MCU due to a recent assault conviction in December, the identity of the central villain is uncertain. It’s also unclear whether the film might feature multiple antagonists.
The Avengers project represents another significant endeavor for Marvel, considering its potential impact on future projects. However, with Levy at the helm, Marvel would secure a director with a remarkable track record of successful films, many of which are at the blockbuster level demanded by the MCU. Levy’s directing credits span from the Night at the Museum series to The Pink Panther, Big Fat Liar, Date Night, Real Steel, Free Guy, The Adam Project, and the Steven Knight-created series All The Light We Cannot See.
Moreover, as a producer at 24 Laps, Levy’s accomplishments are even more extensive, including the highly popular series Stranger Things.
