Avengers 5 and 6: The Russo brothers return to Marvel to direct the next in the franchise
Marvel made a significant announcement at the San Diego Comic-Con, revealing that the Russo Brothers will direct the next two Avengers movies. The superhero franchise has been focused on expanding stories of established MCU characters and introducing new ones since Avengers: Endgame. As the Multiverse Saga approaches Phase 6, Marvel has unveiled plans for the next installments in the Avengers series: Avengers 5 and 6.
Marvel’s Avengers 5 and 6: Russo Brothers Are Back to Direct Marvel’s Next Blockbusters
Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Avengers: Endgame, have been confirmed to return for the next set of films in the franchise. The brothers announced the news at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H on Saturday, July 27. They will be taking over from director Destin Daniel Cretton, who left the Avengers project in November 2023 to focus on other Marvel projects, including a potential sequel to his previous film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as reported by Variety.
Michael Waldron, who also wrote for the Marvel Studios series Loki, will pen the script for the first film. Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to follow a style similar to Avengers: Endgame as it will serve as the concluding film of the Multiverse Saga.
The Russo Brothers are well-acquainted with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having previously directed Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War.
Avengers 5: A New Direction
Initially titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the fifth Avengers installment was set to feature Jonathan Majors as the time-traveling villain Kang. However, following Majors’ conviction for assault and harassment, Marvel severed ties with the actor. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton were attached to the project but exited before Majors’ conviction. The movie is now expected to undergo significant changes, including a new title and storyline.
Avengers 6: Secret Wars
The sixth Avengers film, Secret Wars, has long been a dream project for the Russos. This storyline, originating from a pair of 1980s comic book series, revolves around the powerful antagonist, the Beyonder, who orchestrates battles between Marvel’s heroes and villains on a planet called Battleworld. A 2015 revival of the series, part of Jonathan Hickman’s multiverse saga, has already seen elements incorporated into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In Hickman’s version, Marvel’s multiverses collapse, leaving remnants on a planet ruled by Doctor Doom.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty Gets a New Title
In a significant development, the next installment of the Avengers franchise, originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, has been renamed Avengers: Doomsday, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to follow. This decision likely came after actor Jonathan Majors, who portrayed the supervillain Kang, was convicted of misdemeanor assault and harassment against his ex-girlfriend in December. The studio has not commented on the future of Kang’s character since parting ways with Majors.
Nostalgia and the Future of Marvel
Marvel might be looking to recapture the pre-COVID magic of its grand mega-epics, which brought together numerous superheroes, enthralling dedicated fans and confusing casual viewers. The MCU’s combination of cosmic adventures and deep character explorations has worked before and could succeed again.
Although some interesting Marvel characters might not appear in the upcoming films – the Fantastic Four are stuck in an alternate reality, and Deadpool and Wolverine are too edgy for a PG-13 rating – the Russos could still deliver. They are not flashy, but their teamwork and precision might be what Marvel needs to triumph. If Nolan and Cameron are the Iron Man and Captain America of blockbuster filmmaking, the Russos could be seen as a double Hawkeye. And maybe, just maybe, that’s exactly what Marvel needs to save the day.
When will Avengers 5 release?
Avengers 5 is slated for a release on May 1, 2026.
