Maruti Suzuki is India’s largest automobile manufacturer, with total sales expected to exceed 1.81 lakh units in July 2023. Maruti’s current approach has cleared the road for the company to develop supremacy in the SUV market.
Maruti Brezza, Grand Vitara, Jimny, and Fronx have helped Maruti Suzuki gain dominance in the SUV market. For the first time, Maruti Suzuki has a 25% market share in the SUV segment. This places it first among Indian SUV manufacturers, ahead of Mahindra, Hyundai, and Tata Motors.
Maruti Suzuki has progressed from being the largest small-car manufacturer to the largest SUV manufacturer.
Maruti Suzuki was not a household name in the SUV market only a year ago. Maruti Suzuki has positioned itself as India’s leading SUV manufacturer in terms of volume thanks to the company’s latest tactics.
Maruti Suzuki sold 46,510 UVs with a market share of more than 25% in July 2023, outnumbering Mahindra’s 35,845 units with a 21% market share and Hyundai’s 32,991 units with a 19% market share. Tata Motors sold 28,147 SUVs in July 2023, accounting for 16% of the market. The vast majority of the vehicles are marketed as SUVs. However, when it comes to real old-school SUVs with ladder frame chassis, Mahindra continues to lead the charts with 28,486 vehicles sold.
The latest automobile buying trends in India show a minor fall in compact and inexpensive hatchbacks. Maruti’s Mini sector consists of the Alto and S-Presso, which account for only 9,590 units. The Alto was once India’s best-selling car, but sales now favor larger models from Maruti’s portfolio. Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, Tour S, and WagonR are part of the company’s ‘Compact’ category. This category sold 67,102 items.
Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Fronx, and XL-6 comprise the UV category. This category sold 62,049 items. The introduction of AWD configurations, CNG powerplant alternatives, and even hybrid powertrains could be the key to this success.
Maruti Brezza led the pack with 16,453 units sold, making it the best-selling SUV in July 2023. The Fronx came in second with 13,220 units sold, demonstrating Maruti’s ability to respond to a wide range of client preferences. The Grand Vitara, Jimny, Ignis, and Invicto all contributed to Maruti’s impressive monthly total of 46,510 SUVs sold.
