Marseille have sacked their head coach, Gennaro Gattuso, with immediate effect. The Italian will be replaced by former Ivory Coast manager Jean-Louis Gasset, who was dismissed in the middle of AFCON 2024. Ivory Coast went on to defy all odds and win the tournament under the management of Emerse Fae, in what was his first senior role.
Gasset previously served as the assistant manager to Laurent Blanc at PSG, he also managed Montpellier, Saint Etienne and Bordeaux. He will sign a contract until the end of the season, and will only be an interim appointment, as Marseille want a permanent head coach appointed in the summer.
Gennaro Gattuso to be replaced by Jean-Louis Gasset at Marseille
Gennaro Gattuso’s record with Marseille is as follows:
Games | Wins | Draws | Losses |
24 | 9 | 8 | 7 |
Things have gone wrong for the French club right from the get-go, with Marcelino’s premature sacking starting a downward spiral. They are now winless in six games across all competitions and have also been eliminated from the Coupe de France on penalties by Rennes in the Round of 32.
Marseille’s troubled 2023-24 campaign has also seen fan frustrations hit new heights, and meetings have been held with the club’s ultras, who allegedly warned that future rendezvous would not be so amicable if results did not improve.
The team is currently ninth in the table, 23 points off the top. Their hopes in Europe are not looking positive either, with a mid table finish looking like the only outcome at this stage of their season.
