Marco Asensio was the hero for Real Madrid yesterday as Los Blancos continued their impressive start to the season with a 6-1 victory at the Bernabeu. Asensio scored a hat-trick from midfield to help the team, with Karim Benzema netting a brace and Isco scoring the last goal of the game.
Asensio was one of the most selected players under Zinedine Zidane last season, but has seen his game time fall under Carlo Ancelotti. He was reportedly unhappy with his situation in the squad prior to the game, and threatened to leave the club if it did not improve, according to Sport.
Carlo Ancelotti was aware of the situation and commented that Asensio would get minutes ultimately since he was impressed with the player in training. The Spaniard got his chance yesterday, starting in midfield alongside youngsters Eduardo Camavinga and Fede Valverde, and scoring his first hat-trick in the process. He refrained from celebrating his goals since he formerly played for Mallorca.
The 25-year-old started the game, and was subbed off around the 70 minute mark for Isco, who has also not played a lot of minutes this season. However, Asensio’s ability to take the opportunity presented can only mean well for him under the Italian manager.
Ancelotti believes that he has found the perfect position for Asensio. With him entering his peak years, the time for Asensio to shine is in right now, and in the years to come as the old guard of Kroos, Casemiro and Modric starts to be phased out.
