Marcelo Bielsa has agreed to become the manager of the Uruguay national team in a rather surprising decision. The Argentine tactician has been out of a job since leaving Leeds United in 2022, and has now turned to international management.
His return to South America is set to be announced soon, since the two parties are close to reaching an agreement. There is speculation that his contract with Uruguay could be until the 2025 World Cup qualifiers, or until the 2026 World Cup itself.
Marcelo Bielsa to become Uruguay national team manager
Bielsa is no stranger to international management. He took charge of Argentina in 1998, and helped them win the Summer Olympics gold medal in 2004. He has also managed Chile for 51 games between 2007 and 2011.
There were rumours that Marcelo Bielsa could return to the Premier League to become the new Everton manager. But, talks eventually collapsed between him and the Toffees and he is now set to manage Uruguay.
The original winners of the World Cup had a disappointing 2022 edition, in spite of having some great talent at their disposal. They were eliminated in the group stage itself, and decided to part ways with Diego Carlos.
Now, it will be up to the former Leeds coach to get the best out of the likes of Fede Valverde, Ronald Araujo, Darwin Nunez and Rodrigo Bentancur when he takes charge during the next international break.
