Manjit Singh wins gold for India in 800 m race at the Asian Games

Manjit Singh outran pre-race favourite Jinson Johnson to finish with a personal best time of 1:46.13 and take the gold medal. Johnson won silver in what turned out to be a one-two finish for India.

Manjit Singh won the gold in the men’s 800 metres event while Jinson Johnson clinched the silver medal in men’s 800 metres final at Asian Games 2018 as Indian athletes continued to dominate the tracks in Indonesia. With these two medals, India’s medal tally now stands at 49 with 9 gold, 18 silver and 22 bronze. Manjit Singh finished the race in 1:46.15 minutes while second-placed Jinson Johnson clocked 1:46.35 minutes. Qatar’s Abdalla Abubaker came third with a time of  1:46.38 minutes. Manjit was trailing early on but he sprinted real fast in the final stages to win the race.

Plenty was expected from Manjit and Johnson and they did not disappoint.

This is the third time that India have won two medals in the men’s 800m race at the Asian Games. In 1951, Ranjit Singh had won gold while Kulwant Singh won silver. In 1962, Daljit Singh won a silver medal and Amrit Pal finished with a bronze.

Overall, this was India’s sixth gold medal in the men’s 800m race.
