Manchester United are yet to renew the contract of their Brazilian midfielder Fred. The player’s deal runs out at the end of the ongoing season, and there hasn’t been any significant progress in talks as of yet.
As with most contracts that Manchester United hand out, there is an option to extend the deal for one more season. But it remains to be seen whether the option will be triggered by the club.
Manchester United yet to make decision on Fred
The club will be making decisions on their squad based on the wants of Erik Ten Hag, and keeping in mind the issues of sustainability in the team.
What that means in this context is that even though United plan to offer Fred a three-year contract extension, it will be on lower wages. The midfielder currently earns a wage worth £120,000 per week, and if he decides to renew, he will be paid a lower amount.
While the 29-year-old hasn’t been the first-choice for Erik Ten Hag this season, he has shown that he can still provide an influence from the bench. In keeping with his diminished role, United plan to offer him a contract that will reflect his role in the squad. What remains to be seen is whether he will take the option or leave for free.
