As the summer approaches, things look to be on the verge of shaking up drastically at Real Madrid. Of the many names being linked with, or away from the club, Raphael Varane is one of the players who is being linked with a transfer away from the club after spending a decade at the Spanish capital.
Varane joined Madrid from Lens in 2011 and has formed a strong partnership with club captain Sergio Ramos. However, the futures of both the defenders are up in the air right now. The Frenchman has won every trophy that there is to win, and understandably, could be on the lookout for a new challenge with a new club.
Manchester United are being reported as the frontrunners in the race for the centre-back, as they are looking for a dependable partner for Harry Maguire, with Victor Lindelof being unable to convince spectators of his quality alongside the Englishman.
Madrid are holding out for a deal worth as close to his £61 million market value as possible, and would have to accept the highest offer they get or risk losing Varane for a free transfer at the end of the 21/22 season.
There have been rumours that link the selling of Varane with the idea of potentially funding a transfer for Kylian Mbappe. However, that can only take place if the Paris Saint-Germain star does not extend his contract with the club, and the French Champions are willing to do everything in their power to keep Mbappe at the club.
With David Alaba almost surely set to join Madrid from Bayern Munich in a free transfer at the end of the season, Madrid have potentially found their replacement and will want to cash in on Varane while they still have the opportunity if they fail to negotiate an extension.
