Matheus Cunha on Manchester United’s Radar as Old Trafford Eyes Attacking Reinforcements

Manchester United are setting their sights on Wolverhampton Wanderers’ talisman Matheus Cunha as part of a potential summer rebuild. The 25-year-old Brazilian forward has emerged as one of the top names on United’s shortlist, with the club desperate to bolster their attacking department following a dismal domestic campaign.

Cunha, who has been in stellar form this season, is reportedly keen on a move that would allow him to challenge for silverware. United, currently enduring a difficult spell both on the pitch and in the boardroom, see the Wolves frontman as a pivotal figure to ignite their resurgence.

Release Clause Sparks Transfer Buzz

A key detail in Cunha’s situation is the £62.5 million release clause inserted into his contract at Molineux. While it presents a significant outlay, it offers a clear path for any interested club to trigger negotiations. According to sources within the club speaking to BBC Sport, Cunha is one of several names under consideration, alongside Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.

However, the competition is fierce. Several top Premier League outfits including Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Newcastle are reportedly monitoring Cunha’s availability. His performances have naturally attracted such interest—he’s registered 16 goals this term in all competitions, making him Wolves’ most prolific contributor.

Tactical Fit Under Ruben Amorim

Incoming head coach Ruben Amorim is expected to overhaul United’s approach and prefers the 3-4-2-1 system—a shape that places a premium on dynamic, dual attacking midfielders who can score, create, and press aggressively. Cunha, who plays a similar role under Wolves boss Vitor Pereira, is seen as an ideal candidate for that position.

His ability to drop deeper and link play, or threaten in behind, makes him a valuable multi-functional attacker. Amorim’s system, which has been successful in his previous tenure, requires exactly this blend of skillsets—aggression, flair, and tactical awareness.

United’s Goal Drought Continues

Manchester United’s offensive issues have plagued them all season. With only 38 goals scored in 33 league outings, they rank among the bottom-six in terms of attacking output. Even newly promoted clubs have found the net more frequently.

Neither Rasmus Hojlund nor Joshua Zirkzee—before the latter’s season-ending injury—has consistently delivered in front of goal. The urgency to bring in firepower has never been greater. Cunha could be that missing spark, bringing aggression and finesse to an underperforming frontline.

Financial Factors at Play

United’s transfer strategy will be significantly influenced by their end-of-season fortunes. Their ongoing Europa League campaign offers a financial lifeline. Should they advance past Athletic Bilbao and go on to lift the trophy, Champions League qualification would be secured, potentially injecting over £100 million into the club’s coffers.

Conversely, failing to improve on their current 14th-place standing in the league could result in a £24 million drop compared to last season. The implications are significant, especially for a club operating with strict financial parameters.

Ruben Amorim acknowledged the situation in a recent statement following a home loss to Wolves: “We have a plan, but it’s something we will address in the summer.” It’s a sentiment that underlines the balancing act United must perform—planning without knowing their precise budget.

Cunha Speaks on Future Ambitions

In a revealing interview with The Observer in March, Cunha made his intentions clear: “I need to take the next step and fight for titles.” The Brazilian is clearly eyeing a club where he can challenge for top honours, something that aligns with United’s aspirations—provided they can get their house in order.

Though his 32 goals in 87 appearances for Wolves are impressive, his discipline has raised some eyebrows. Two red cards this season led to six games missed through suspension. For a side already struggling with availability and depth, this could be a consideration.

While Manchester United’s pursuit of Matheus Cunha is genuine, a deal is far from guaranteed. With several positions to reinforce—including wing-backs, midfielders, and central defenders—United’s recruitment drive will need to be shrewd and strategic. Yet, if circumstances align, Cunha could be the first domino in a chain of changes under Amorim.
